Winter in Silver: Great Hill, New York City

Winter in Silver: Great Hill, New York City

The recent cold spell in the Eastern US and Canada begs for a bit of winter beauty. A year ago, almost precisely, the author found himself mounting a steep path with his dog, finding himself in an expansive belvedere and the monochrome tutelage of the local magi of Great Hill. : | : Great Hill is the highest point in Manhattan's eminent domain, Central Park, in altitude and latitude. As the treed gate to Harlem at 110th street, Great Hill slopes down and east to Lasker Pool where, every minute or so, a dog is trailed in companionable silence by its owner.

"Hey Snow, be careful! We are in a shady business. We need to be fit and your flakes are weighing down our branches," pleads the worried Trees.

Reaching out into the snow fall, the agitated Trees, with their twisted knotted voices shout, "Just remember, Snow, that your perfect blanket of whiteness will soon be turned into a wild expressionist canvass of foot steps, paw prints, snow angles and make-shift sled tracks, while we, Trees, are blossoming into aromatic beauty."
